| This illustration shows
the "T" values of this system.
Beginning with T1 at the hand, the
rope enters and exits the first two pulleys with T1. The eye
of the first two pulleys is T2 (i.e., the sum of the rope's T values).
Continue this process: labeling the T
value of the ropes exiting a pulley with the same value it entered,
and doubling this value for the eye of the pulley. When items
join (e.g., a rope and prusik), add the T values together.
Since there is T1 on the hand and T10
on the load, this is a 10-to-1 (i.e., 10:1) system.
Each one pound of pull by the hand will
raise 10 pounds of load. This hand is holding 10 pounds of the
100 pound load.
Note that the anchors are holding 110
pounds (i.e., T11). This is the 100 pound load plus the 10
pounds that the hand is pulling against the anchors.
